Hello fellow makers! Future maker here. I’m looking into different mulling slabs, and all of them are smooth glass. What is The easiest and least expensive way to roughen the surface up before I start mulling? It would be great if the slabs had the same surface as the bottom of the glass mullers, but oh well.

Hi!! I found mine already roughened, but I read online that you can use a powder called “conundrum” or “calcium carbonate”. You wet it and forme a paste and then mull it on the slab like it was paint. Warning: it appears to be a nasty and hard process, the grinding noise is supposed to be awful...
That’s what I’m trying to avoid! It seems like it would really hurt my arm, too.
I did not roughen mine, but just after a few uses with abrasive pigments, it ended up roughened, naturally and quickly with no damage to the muller. I noticed another maker who was using a glass mirror too.
Stacey, that’s probably what I will do, then. Thank you! Did you happen to notice if there was any difficulty with the first few batches that you mulled on the totally smooth surface?
I noticed no problems.
I worked with selfmade earthy pigments in the beginning, they roughned the surface pretty fast.
And they were very gritty definitely not a nice sound 🙈
If it goes to hard just add more liquid ! 🙂
Fabulous advice!
